Hamlet

Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan is excited to be offering our up-and-coming young generation of theatre artists the opportunity to Take the Stage this summer through our newly developed summer camp programming! This two-week long, half-day program offers young artists aged 13-17 the opportunity to discover Shakespeare in a fun, creative and engaging way while expanding their growing skills and talents in the world of theatre. Facilitated by working professional artists from Saskatoon's theatre community, campers will experience what it’s like to workshop and perform a shortened version of Shakespeare’s Hamlet from start to finish, culminating in the presentation of their work on the SOTS Main Stage! Junior Acting Camp

Midsummer Night's Dream

Join Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan for 2 fun-filled weeks in our debut summer camps! SOTS invites campers aged 8 to 13 to Take the Stage on morning adventures where they’ll be introduced to the world of Shakespearian plays through a shortened and devised creation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, to be workshopped and brought to life on our Main Stage by the campers themselves! SOTS is excited to offer this immersive opportunity at a shortened, half-day length, to accommodate for those seeking a variety of theatrical activity. This intro to the world of Shakespeare and theatre will be imagined through games, warm-ups, script work and rehearsals, all to be facilitated by Saskatoon’s own professional Theatre Artists, some of whom you might even catch a glimpse of on our stage this summer. No matter your experience level, SOTS has something exciting planned for everyone and we can’t wait for you to join us!

Rachel Mclaughlin

Youth Camp Coordinator

Rachel McLaughlin (she/her) is a theatre artist based in Treaty Six Territory. Recently earning her BFAH in acting, with a minor in History from the University of Saskatchewan, she has excitedly rejoined Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan’s team as both their Youth Camps Coordinator and Executive Assistant after working with them over their 2023 Festival season. For the last few years, Rachel has been working and learning alongside local theatres such as 25th Street Theatre, Whirligig Theatre Collective, The Barn Playhouse and Greystone Theatre as both an Actor and Stage Manager; collecting inspiration and joy from Saskatoon’s wonderful artistic collaborators. In addition, she has spent over 7 years working in and developing youth programming for a variety of organizations including the YMCA, Blackstrap Youth Camp and USASK Drama Camp’s. Grateful and excited to be bringing her two passions of theatre and play together to develop Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan’s debut Summer Camp series, Rachel is honored to continue creating, learning and growing alongside SOTS in their 2024 season.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I register?

Once you have decided which Take the Stage offering best suits your camper, you’ll find its designated registration form to complete on our website! Please fill out any required information as well as any additional info you feel it important for our team to know. To secure your registration spot, someone from our team will be in contact with you shortly after receiving your completed form to process payment of camp fees (accepted through either e-transfer, or Credit Card)

How many spots are being offered for each camp division?

Senior Company: 12 registration spots

Junior Company: 12 registration spots

*To ensure the enhanced experience of all those participating in the premier year of Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan’s Take the Stage Summer Camps, we have limited our enrollment capacity to 12 spots per age division. Our hope is that this offers a tailored and personalized experience to each young artist as they discover, learn, and grow in their theatrical skills and passion.

What happens if I want to register but there are no spots available?

To accommodate a high volume of demand, we have opened a registration waitlist on a first-come, first-served basis! Should space become available, those at the top of the waitlist and moving down will be contacted as soon as possible in the hopes of filling any openings. Please note that being accepted on this waitlist does not guarantee your camper’s enrollment. Should SOTS be unable to reach you regarding an admission opportunity, we reserve the right to move on to the next available person(s) on the list.

What are the important dates I need to remember?

Registration opens on Friday, March 8th, 2024, and will close on Friday, June 13th, 2024 at 12:00pm.

Camp will run from Monday, July 15th to Friday, July 26th, discounting days used to break over the weekend.

The deadline to withdraw from participation and receive a full refund is Monday, July 8th, 2024.

What is your cancellation policy?

Upon registration, a portion of your fees equalling an amount of half the price of the total required fees will be allocated as a deposit to ensure your camper’s spot is secured. Should you need to withdraw from participation, cancellation with a full refund will be honored given 1 week’s notice before the first day of camp. No full-refund and forfeit of your deposit will be given with less notice. The deadline to withdraw from participation is Monday, July 8th, 2024. Please be advised that this policy has been made to accommodate the high volume of demand for our camp and ensures those on our registration waitlist have the necessary time available to secure their own registration as space becomes available.

**IMPORTANT NOTE: Please note that Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan reserves the right to cancel our camp programming by June 14th, 2024, should the minimum requirement for enrollment not be met. In the event of cancellation, a full refund will be provided and due notice to all participants will be made.

Things to Keep in Mind

Medical/Behavioral Conditions

For the safety and enjoyment of all Take the Stage participants and facilitators, please advise Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan of any additional medical or behavioural conditions and accommodations your child may have. As we are committed to providing a fun and enriching experience for all, please note that abusive behaviour of any kind will not be tolerated.

Allergy Policy

Please note that Take the Stage is hosted in a multi-user area, and we are therefore unable to guarantee a nut-free environment. However, we do encourage all participants to be mindful of any allergies present on-site and request that any food items brought into camp aim to be allergy-friendly

IMPORTANT NOTE:

SOTS is offering both a Senior and Junior camp this summer that will have varying process, skill, and workshop intensity. We understand that not all of our young artists will be at the same theatrical level, and to accommodate this we have decided to accept artists aged 13 years at the time of the camp in either our Senior or Junior company. During registration, parents will have the opportunity to choose which camp they feel their child will enjoy best. Please feel free to reach out to our team if you have any further questions.
