bringing the light!

a message from our artistic director

It goes without saying, that recent years have been difficult, and they continue to challenge us in new ways as we move forward. But, if these last few years gave us anything, it would be appreciation for what we have and what we value. It has given us perspective for the past and the future. Our 2023 season is all about bringing the light! We seek joy. We seek love. We seek light that can bring us together. Hopefully, you have had a chance to experience our newly developed site, or perhaps you have enjoyed our stunning lights from a distance, however, we are just getting started. Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan (SOTS) has one of the most unique theatre spaces in Canada and we relish our future of light and spectacle. Join us this coming season to see what limits will be challenged, as we explore the full technical possibilities available to our site and theatre. In 2023, we will continue to shine focus on our local artists through the Players’ Stage Series, which features original short works that reflect and respond to the world and works of William Shakespeare. Last season, we had our first world premiere with Iago Speaks by Daniel Macdonald and next season will see, yet another premiere of a new Canadian play! Working in partnership with Shakespeare in the Ruins (Winnipeg), we bring Jessica B. Hills’ The Dark Lady to life on stage in Saskatoon – a story that brings light to a new voice and perspective. On our Main Stage you will find two of Shakespeare’s most endearing and timeless pieces: As You Like It and Romeo & Juliet. Joy, passion and discovery abound in Arden as a group of runaways share with us the brightness of love, not to mention plenty of laughs! Romeo + Juliet will seek to reframe our expectations of what our space can do and amplify that light we all seek through yonder window.
